Restrained Flange Adaptor
restrained flange adaptor is a type of pipe fitting designed to connect pipes to flanged equipment while providing additional restraint to prevent pipe movement and separation under pressure.
A restrained flange adaptor is a flange adaptor with grip device, which can be a grip ring, wedge etc. The purpose is to grip the pipe and thus prevent seal failure due to movement of the pipe.It is specially suitable for HDPE pipe which can be easily deformed and the project conditions that tend to cause pipe movement, e.g. ground that tends to subside, pipes with large temperature variations etc.

Feature
When we tighten the bolts evenly according to the diagonal position, the gland will lock the brass ring and the rubber ring to move towards the flange body under the compression force of tie rods (as shown in Fig. No.1 as below)
Judberd’s restrained flange adaptor is designed with a slope (as shown in Fig. No.2 below)
When the rubber ring and the brass ring are moving downwards, the diameter of the lower part will be smaller ,then rubber ring and brass grip ring will be under pressure from the periphery and the diameter will be smaller, then the rubber ring and the brass grip ring are subjected to the pressure from the gland above and the pressure from the flange body around, the rubber ring will deform to form a seal, and the diameter of grip brass ring will become smaller to be stuck on the pipe, and at the same time there are chamfered corners on the grip brass ring (No. 3, as shown in the figure below), which can be further stuck into the pipe. It is specially designed for HDPE pipe which is easy to be deformed .
Funtion
The primary function is to connect a plain-end pipe to a flanged component (such as a valve, pump, or another pipe) while preventing axial movement. This helps to maintain the integrity of the pipeline under pressure or thermal expansion.
Design
It typically includes mechanical restraint components, such as grip rings or locking segments, that grip the pipe and prevent it from pulling out of the adaptor. This is in addition to the sealing mechanism that ensures a leak-proof connection.
Material
Restrained flange adaptors are usually made from durable materials like ductile iron or steel and are often coated or lined to resist corrosion.
Installation
The installation involves inserting the plain-end pipe into the adaptor, tightening the bolts, and ensuring the restraint mechanism is properly engaged. This ensures both a secure seal and mechanical restraint.
Application
Restrained flange adaptors are commonly used in water and wastewater systems, gas distribution, and industrial pipelines where pipe movement needs to be controlled to prevent joint failure and leaks.
